The Tonkawa Tribe was honored in Austin for protecting the city in the 1840s. Tribal leaders returned after 140 years to receive long-overdue recognition
Five tribal leaders, including Chief Russell Martin , visited the city last week to accept this long-overdue honor.
The tribe's role in defending the city also allowed them to trade in Austin, fostering a mutually beneficial relationship between the settlers and the Tonkawa. "It all worked well until the winds of fortune for our city shifted, and there was talk of moving the Capitol away from Austin," said O'Dell. "The history we're acknowledging today is a story that is often unknown to many people, including myself," Judge Brown said. "The Tonkawa's contributions are a shining example of how people from different worlds can come together in times of need. It’s fitting that we recognize them with this Friendship Day.""We fought alongside Texas, but we lost half our tribe. It’s amazing to be welcomed again," Chief Martin shared.
