’s journey to uncover a forgotten chapter of American history has brought new life to the story of the Rosenwald Schools.“There was not a comprehensive photographic account of the program, so I set out to do exactly that,” said Feiler, whose exhibit “Between 1912 and 1937, nearly 5,000 Rosenwald Schools were built across the South, including 500 in Texas, primarily in East and Northeast Texas where most enslaved people lived before Emancipation.
Feiler’s exhibit features 23 black-and-white photographs paired with narratives that connect the schools to significant historical moments such as the Great Migration and Brown v. Board of Education. “One defining photo is from the Hopewell School—a portrait of two elderly African Americans holding a 19th-century portrait,” Feiler explained. “It’s a link to Sophia and Martin McDonald, born into slavery, who donated land to build the school.”Despite their monumental impact, many Rosenwald Schools fell into disrepair after integration. Feiler’s project seeks to preserve their history and inspire change.
