In Austin, few traditions embody the city's unique spirit quite like Ballet Austin's The Nutcracker, especially the beloved role of Mother Ginger.

“In the summer of 1997, I dreamt that Ann Richards, with her fabulous white hair, was Mother Ginger,” recalls Cookie Ruiz, Ballet Austin’s Executive Director. “I woke up and thought, ‘Why not?’ But I made the rookie mistake of asking her to do the entire run. Of course, she had other things going on.
“Mother Ginger is only on stage for about three minutes, but those moments are powerful,” Ruiz explains. “We think about who made an impact over the past year—whether they’re first responders, educators, or local leaders. It’s about lifting up the stories that make Austin what it is.”Vince Young, the Longhorn football star, made waves with his towering frame, delighting audiences despite standing well above the iconic skirt. “Vince was so gracious,” Ruiz remembers.
Ruiz's dream of seeing Ann Richards as Mother Ginger finally came true in 1999, three years after her initial invitation.“She was gracious and warm, meeting every dancer beforehand,” Ruiz recalls. “Seeing her as Mother Ginger was the fulfillment of a dream—not just mine, but for everyone who loved her.”
The tradition also honors those who serve, with past Mother Gingers including military personnel from Fort Hood.With over 2 million attendees since its inception, The Nutcracker continues to unite Austin. Each year, Ballet Austin ensures ticket prices are accessible, offering a Community Night so everyone can experience the joy of the holidays.
