'The availability of cattle vaccines makes any calls for further badger culls... more irrelevant to bTB spread than they already were'

New research by two globally prestigious universities has found that vaccinating dairy cows against bovine tuberculosis can reduce the spread of the disease by 89% among herds.

It followed two years of research in Ethiopia, where vaccinated and unvaccinated cattle were enclosed with naturally infected animals so the results could be studied. But protected badgers often find themselves in the firing line in bids to curb the spread of bTB as they can catch it from cattle. Former DAERA Minister, Edwin Poots, greenlit a cull of up to 4,000 badgers as part of NI’s bovine TB eradication strategy despite mounting evidence badger culls don’t work as it is mostly transmitted cattle-to-cattle.

The Badger Trust, which opposes killing badgers over the disease, says this new research highlighting the availability of vaccines “makes any call for further badger culls... even more irrelevant to bTB spread than they already were”.
