A Givenchy-clad Taylor Swift and her family stood accepting well-wishers on Thursday evening. At 36 years old, the chart-topper officially became the youngest-ever female inductee to the institution.

As a few hundred guests steadily trickled into the ballroom of the Marriott Marquis in Times Square just before 7 p.m. for the annual Songwriters Hall of Fame induction ceremony, a crowd had already formed around the table where aTaylor Swift and her family, plus the director Steven Spielberg and his wife Kate Capshaw, stood accepting well-wishers.

On Thursday evening, at 36 years old, the chart-topper officially became the youngest-ever female inductee to the institution. A couple feet away, two teenage girls—the daughters of the a music licensing exec and a rare exception to the event’s 21+ age restriction—looked on in disbelief.

“We are shaking,” one of the star-struck teens told, clutching her sister’s hand. Since their mom is a board member, they typically attend the ceremony every year—but this one was different.

“We were really lucky to be brought today because there’s such high security…usually there’s a lot less. ” Indeed, three body guards surrounded Swift throughout the night, leaving for a different post nearby only when her fiancé Travis Kelce arrived just as the ceremony began a little after 8 p.m. The—particularly in a room of A&R guys, musicians, producers, label heads, and lawyers—was as palpable as it was at thethe night before. But as songwriter Graham Lyle put it in his acceptance speech early on in the night, “Sometimes I think this business forgets that the song is the start of the whole thing.

” The evening, which began with cocktails at 6 p.m. and stretched out until after 12:30 a.m., was an ode to the song: as a medium, artistic practice, and a product worth paying creators fairly to make. The night celebrated the good songs, the great songs, “the kind of songs that become part of people’s lives,” as one presenter said, but also the early, half-baked, and downrightsongs—which honoree John Fogerty waxed poetic about during a 30-minute speech.

Alanis Morissette called out the songs that act as survival tools; classics that seem to appear to the songwriter out of thin air, and the everyday habit of writing to pursue them even when there seemingly is no divine inspiration or lightning bolt from the sky. What’s Love Got to Do with It ); Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley of KISS; and Kenny Loggins.

Each songwriter celebrated received both a cover performance from an artist, and a speech from a notable figure, both of their choosing. Some of the pairings were quite powerful, as in Tamar Braxton’s performance offor Stewart and Sheléa’s medley of Afanasieff’s hits, from the new Christmas classic to a Mariah Carey medley.

Later in the night, as energy flagged, Billy Corgan of the Smashing Pumpkins and John Rzeznik of the Goo Goo Dolls dialed it back up with KISS’sfrom her latest album. The British chanteuse also gave the most pointed speech of the night, calling for a better system for songwriter royalties that isn’t based on radio play.

NEW YORK, NEW YORK - JUNE 11: Raye performs onstage during the 2026 Songwriters Hall Of Fame Induction Ceremony at The New York Marriott Marquis on June 11, 2026 in New York City. with steady grace. Along with her mom, Andrea, Swift sang along with matching expressions, clearly moved: “Don’t you think I was too young to be messed with? The girl in the dress cried the whole way home.

” Spielberg took the podium to introduce Swift, highlighting their mutual love for storytelling.

Though the director veered into weird territory by admitting he asked AI how many words have been written by and about Swift—which provoked a loud “boo” from someone in the crowd—he almost managed to bring it around: “I just thought, well, she is such a force that the depth of her achievements defy AI. ” Luckily, Swift was soon on stage accepting the honor; one of her most meaningful industry awards to date. Over about 20 minutes, Swift crafted a portrait of a record-breaking artist who is two decades into a career that has enabled her to work with so many collaborators .

Her trajectory has had its highs and lows and left her with no shortage of advice to spare. She teared up when talking about her family’s sacrifices in moving her to Nashville, and how much they’ve given up for her to be able to write songs. Swift also reflected on making peace with criticism, fair and unfair, from both bots and real people.

“I had to learn how to entertain a crowd, learn choreography, and be less annoying, and navigate the industry, and fiercely protect my own sanity,” Swift said, her voice a bit hoarse from screaming for the Knicks. “I had to learn all of that through difficult lessons, and massive amounts of trial and error, and chaos and calamity. But songwriting for me was pretty much the only thing I naturally did…it felt easy to nurture something I loved so much.

” Swift later cleared her throat and quoted the show, “It’s the one constant in life, son, you build something worth having, somebody’s gonna try to take it. ”Princess Diana’s Iconic Icy Blue Dress Lives On at the 2026 Cannes Film Festival
