Accounts show totals paid out to 5-strong team of officials appointed to oversee improvements at the Cunard

Taxpayers in Liverpool have paid out nearly £1.3m to a team of government commissioners in fees and expenses since they arrived in the city in the summer of 2021.

Mr Anderson left the council after his arrest in December 2020 and was replaced by Joanne Anderson as Mayor in May 2021, with the commissioners arriving at the Cunard the next month. The experienced professionals installed at Liverpool Council do not come cheap and in January 2022 there was major controversy as they were awarded a 50% pay hike - all at the expense of the city's taxpayers. Mr Cunningham's daily fee rose from £800 to £1200 while the daily rates of his colleagues went from £700 to £1100.

Analysis shows that from June 2021 to September 2023, lead commissioner Mike Cunningham has received a total of £285,056.42 in fees and expenses. His colleague Joanna Killian received £187,270.75.
