South Carolinians who filed their 2021 individual income tax returns by the extended deadline of Oct. 17 will get a rebate of up to $800 by the end of the year, according to the South Carolina Department of Revenue.

Those who missed the October deadline can still receive a rebate, but it would not reach their bank accounts until March of 2023, the department said. They have until Feb. 15, 2023, to file their tax returns. To qualify for the rebate, applicants need to have a tax liability for 2021 and be a resident of South Carolina. The maximum payment one can receive is $800, and eligible applicants can calculate their rebate payments on the revenue department's website.

"When referring to this year's rebate, you are considered as having tax liability if you owe state Individual Income Tax for the year 2021,” the agency wrote online. “The amount of your tax liability is determined by the amount of Individual Income Tax you owe, minus any credits.”State lawmakers approved the distribution of the tax rebates during a session in June, including it in a $13.8 billion budget bill.

Filers will receive their rebate checks via direct deposit, debit card, or in the mail, depending on how they have received previous state funds. For filers that still owe money to the state, if the balance is more than the rebate, the rebate will be subtracted from what is owed and the filer will not receive a rebate.
