The IRS has warned of refund slowdowns due to staffing shortages and ongoing backlogs.
Tax day has traditionally been April 15. That’s changed this year.
Tax deadline day is typically April 15 but because April 16 falls on a Saturday this year, the Emancipation Day holiday will be observed on the closest weekday – Friday, April 15 – meaning city and federal offices in D.C., including the Internal Revenue Service, will be closed. The holiday is pushing the tax day deadline back to Monday, April 18 for everyone except residents of Maine and Massachusetts where Patriots Day is celebrated on Monday, moving the tax filing deadline to April 19th.
The IRS has issued 51.77million refunds worth $171.14 billion. The average refund is up $376 to $3,305 this year vs. $2,929 at the same point in 2021.
