The task force recommendations, which include improving working conditions and offering better training and support, come as lawmakers in Austin are grappling with "Working with the Texas Legislature, we will develop and implement strategies that attract, retain, and support highly qualified educators to provide students across the state with even greater opportunities to learn and grow," he said in a statement.
The report also calls for the state to raise the minimum salary for teachers, which currently sits at just $33,660. The report says it would take a teacher making that much 20 years to reach a salary of $54,540. While most school systems pay above the minimum, the report says that small and rural districts are frequently at or just slightly above it.
