As much as 25 percent of softwood supplies in the U.S. comes from America’s neighbor to the north, according to the Forest Resources Association. Tariffs on Canadian lumber went into effect at the beginning of March before being paused on Thursday. On Friday, tariff talks by the Trump Administration ramped back up."Plywood went up or wafer board went up about $4 a sheet yesterday and today it's already back down because everything got pulled back,” Wayne Calusing, the General Manager of Sutherlands in Salt Lake City, said. "You know if you need it, buy it. If it's a big project like that, I would say hey buy it. We just don't know what is going to happen." The lumber store has been stocking up on lumber, preparing for their busy season between March and October and anticipating potential tariffs. The lumber in stock is safe from tariffs, but the future stock is in question as some mills are having a knee jerk reaction with pricing. So far, Sutherlands has not had to increase their prices as lumber has returned to near pre-pandemic prices. "There was a time you could buy them a dollar 2x4, but now $3 or $4 or $6 a board is crazy. I imagine that's why the price of homes go up quite a bit,” David Ramos said. He has quite a few projects in the works and needs sheeting, plywood and 2x4s. "One of the things I want to do is finish the playhouse for my grandkids, and yeah I'm kind of concerned about the prices going up." Ramos said he is planning to buy lumber now before the price goes up, but that he is happy with what the Trump Administration is doing. Overall, the price of lumber is stable right now, but it all depends on what happens with the tariffs — which is why Calusing’s advice is buy if you need it right now, especially if you have a spring project or construction.
