San Francisco public transit riders will have to wait longer to pay fares by tapping credit or debit cards. The Metropolitan Transportation Commission's new payment system, initially targeted for a spring 2024 rollout, has faced delays due to testing issues with card readers. While officials haven't set a new launch date, they acknowledge that extensive testing is still required.

San Francisco public-transit riders will have to continue waiting further into 2025 for the chance to pay their fares by tapping their credit or debit cards .

Goodwin said that while the commission could still meet its targeted spring deadline, there are “at this point too many unknowns to declare that we’re going to do that and make that declaration with any kind of confidence.” Once lab testing is complete, MTC officials said, the agency plans on testing the software in stations, as well as other forms of transportation such as buses or ferries. The pilot period of testing is officially scheduled to last 9 weeks, but Goodwin said the duration depends on the types of issues that might be encountered in deploying the new technology.

‘Korean Wave’ exhibit closes out SF stint The monthslong installation concludes with examination of Korean film Rebecca Long, MTC’s director of legislation and public affairs, said that the transition to “Clipper 2.0” involves “going from a card-based system where the information is basically unique to a specific card to an account-based system associated with a person.”
