Tania Campbell faces another no confidence motion after Ekurhuleni council bylaw repeal
JOHANNESBURG - A motion of no confidence in Ekurhuleni mayor Tania Campbell will go ahead next Friday, thanks to a repeal of a council regulation.
Last month, councillors from the African National Congress and Economic Freedom Fighters coalition repealed rule 83 of its standing order bylaws, which stated that a motion debated and voted on in council could not be brought back until a six-month period has lapsed. On 26 October last year, council voted to remove Campbell as mayor through a motion of no confidence. However, she was re-elected about two weeks later by the same council.
Ekurhuleni speaker Nthabiseng Tshivenga said this process started last November and went through a public participation process before being brought to council for a vote. "It was basically looked at legislation that was progressive and enabling to the process that we want to embark on in service delivery in Ekurhuleni, and just generally get the city working again."
Campbell is expected to be removed next Friday, as the ANC and EFF coalition has a majority of seats in council.
