Justin Schwartz, the new chancellor at the University of Colorado Boulder, was drawn to the university after asking himself what’s next for his career.
“There’s so much great work happening at CU in all different spheres of sustainability, and I think there’s an opportunity to elevate that in a way that amplifies the impact that we’re having, and really gives us the opportunity to establish national, international leadership,” he said.“Building those relationships across the institution is critical because I do consider myself a relationship-based leader,” Schwartz said. “I do want to be fully data-informed, I’ve got to be data-informed.
Some students don’t make it to graduation because of finances — it’s not always academic, Schwartz said. Key factors in improving affordability include continued advocacy for more state support, increased transparency with costs and reduced financial surprises. Schwartz said he wants to ensure CU Boulder has a strong reputation in areas in addition to STEM, including music, arts and humanities.
Before being the executive vice president and provost, Schwartz was the Harold and Inge Marcus Dean of Engineering at Penn State. Before Penn State, Schwartz was a faculty member at Florida State University and department head at North Carolina State University.
