“He showed me all the harnesses, got me harnessed up, made sure everything was checked tight, and then connected on the back of me,“ said Barry Flynt, recounting the ride to remember in the summer of 2021. “Then he said, ‘Okay, what we’re going to do is we’re going up and walk to the edge,’” Flynt recalled, “and then he did a countdown.
” In five seconds, Flynt and Lewis were off, suspended by parachute hundreds of feet from the landing site.
“It was a feeling of being free,“ said Flynt. “I did a skydive many years ago, nothing like this. It’s way different. ”Flynt said he visited with Lewis at his home after the jump and felt as if he had long known him.
So, if Lewis paid attention to safety and detail, what was it that went wrong on his last tandem flight, in which a 50-year-old man also perished? Flynt suspects there was an equipment malfunction—something that could not be seen or accounted for in the pre-jump check. On Sunday when he learned of a BASE jumper passing, before a name was revealed on a social media post, Flynt said he “knew” it was Lewis.
