A nostalgic look at the Tamiya Lunch Box RC car, its history, features, and assembly process.
The Lunch Box , a classic RC car first introduced in 1987, remains largely unchanged. Sharing components with older models like the Hornet and Grasshopper buggies, the CW-01 chassis offers a high-rise monster truck experience at a 1/12th scale. While building from a box of parts provides a traditional experience, a ready-built version is available. The kit includes a motor and electronic speed controller, but radio gear, battery, and paint are required separately.
The Lunch Box features wheelie capabilities, especially with a Lipo battery. Assembly requires basic tools such as a wrench, allen key, screwdriver, pliers, craft knife, and scissors. Tamiya manuals are renowned for their clarity, guiding you through the process. The kit includes clearly labeled bags for hardware, with larger plastic parts individually numbered. Cutting and smoothing these parts is recommended. The manual provides lifesize diagrams for screws, nuts, and threaded rods, along with instructions for greasing and gluing. For enhanced performance, metal ball bearings can be installed instead of the original plastic and metal bushes
