After initially attempting to suppress information, the Tamaulipas government was compelled to issue public warnings about the dangers of land mines and explosives planted by the Gulf Cartel in the northern part of the state. Two separate incidents involving government and civilian vehicles striking landmines brought the issue to light, prompting the government to acknowledge the growing threat.

After trying to conceal information, the government of Tamaulipas , a Mexican state, was compelled to issue a series of warnings regarding the widespread deployment of cartel land mines and explosive devices in the northern region of the state. These warnings followed initial coverage by Breitbart Texas of a government vehicle striking a makeshift landmine near the state's border with the United States.

Last Wednesday, two employees of Mexico's National Water Commission (CONAGUA) sustained injuries after their work vehicle detonated from driving over a land mine planted by Gulf Cartel gunmen in an area between the cities of Rio Bravo and Reynosa, Tamaulipas.A few days later, a farmer suffered similar injuries when he drove his tractor over another landmine in a rural area near the city of San Fernando, Tamaulipas. In both instances, government officials exerted pressure on local Mexican news outlets to refrain from publishing information about the incidents. Details of the incidents surfaced through social media. Breitbart Texas published exclusive information about the first explosion and reviewed internal documents from CONAGUA that provided additional details.Soon after that report, the Tamaulipas government disseminated a series of warnings about buried explosive devices. The notice urged residents in particular communities to avoid handling suspicious devices and to immediately contact emergency services. Jorge Cuellar, the spokesman for security issues in Tamaulipas, persisted in minimizing and, at times, denying most of the violent incidents occurring throughout the state. These include large-scale shootouts, kidnappings, targeted killings, and forced disappearances, which Breitbart Texas has documented for over a year. Two factions of the Gulf Cartel have been engaged in a fierce turf war for control of lucrative drug and human smuggling routes, responsible for most of the violence in the northern part of the state. In their shootouts, the Gulf Cartel has been utilizing convoys of armored vehicles laden with gunmen. As a countermeasure to these vehicles, cartel gunmen have begun employing explosives. Gunmen have used makeshift landmines, improvised explosives, and even weaponized drones to drop explosives on their adversaries and law enforcement agencies
