But the Utah senator has cut a fairly lonely figure in Washington in recent years: a traditional conservative now out of step with a party that has lurched increasingly to the right under the “Make America Make Again” banner.
That lurch was evident in another announcement that set the press gallery buzzing earlier in the week, when House Speaker Kevin McCarthy gave the green light toIndeed, no sooner had Congress resumed after the northern summer recess than McCarthy moved to appease far-right allies of Trump by directing three powerful House committees to probe allegations of “abuse of power, obstruction and corruption” surrounding the Biden family − and in particular, the president’s troubled son, Hunter.
They’ve traced about $US20 million in payments from foreign entities, including from Russian and Ukrainian oligarchs who purportedly paid Hunter and his associate as they allegedly milked the prestigious Biden name to line their own pockets. But while the optics aren’t great, none of this yet amounts to a smoking gun identifying direct corruption by Biden, who was vice president to Barack Obama at the time.To that end, McCarthy’s decision to announce an impeachment inquiry − without even taking it to a vote − is as much of a risk for his leadership as it is for the president’s political fortunes.
