American citizen Ryan Corbett, wrongfully detained by the Taliban since August 2022, has been released. The exchange involved Khan Muhammad, an Afghan Taliban member serving a life sentence in California for narcoterrorism and heroin distribution charges.

The Taliban has confirmed that it is holding Ryan Corbett , an American citizen who was arrested in Afghanistan in August 2022. The U.S. State Department classifies Corbett's detention as wrongful. The Taliban announced the release of two U.S. nationals in exchange for Khan Muhammad , an Afghan Taliban member who was serving a life sentence in California for narcoterrorism and heroin distribution charges.

Muhammad was convicted in 2008 for attempting to acquire rockets for attacks on Americans and their allies in Afghanistan and for purchasing opium destined for heroin production and shipment to the United States. Taliban spokesperson Zabihullah Mujahid informed NBC News that two U.S. nationals were released in exchange for Muhammad but declined to reveal their identities. The Biden administration had been engaged in negotiations with the Taliban to facilitate the release of Americans detained in Afghanistan in exchange for Afghans held in U.S. custody. Both Corbett's family and the Afghan Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed gratitude to the Qatari government for its role in mediating the release. Corbett, a long-time resident of Afghanistan prior to the 2021 withdrawal of U.S.-led forces, was visiting the country when he was arrested. Reports indicated that his health was deteriorating during his imprisonment. The Corbett family, while overjoyed with Ryan's return, acknowledged the families of George Glezmann and Mahmoud Habibi, whose release is also being explored. They stated, 'It was our hope that Ryan, George, and Mahmoud would be returned to their families together, and we cannot imagine the pain that our good fortune will bring them. We recognize the immense privilege of our family's reunion today, and pledge to keep praying — and fighting — for George and Mahmoud's swift release.' The Taliban had accused the three Americans of espionage and proselytizing Christianity in Afghanistan, which they govern according to Islamic law.
