A senior Taliban leader revealed ongoing negotiations with the Biden administration to exchange detained Americans in Afghanistan for Afghans held in U.S. custody. The Taliban has demanded the release of three Afghan nationals, including Muhammad Rahim, the sole Afghan prisoner at Guantánamo Bay. The Taliban claims to have captured three American nationals accused of spying and proselytizing Christianity.
PESHAWAR, Pakistan — The Biden administration has been in talks with the Taliban to exchange Americans detained in Afghanistan for Afghans in U.S. custody, a senior Taliban leader with direct knowledge of the negotiations told NBC News on Wednesday. The Taliban leader, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to discuss the issue publicly, said the two sides had been negotiating for the past two years but had so far failed to reach a deal.
In addition to Rahim, the Taliban leader said, Afghan officials also demanded the release of two other Afghan nationals imprisoned in the United States who “have nothing to do with terrorism or politics.” “The charges leveled against them are different and we will hopefully get them back to the Afghanistan,” he said.
