Talented Broomfield dominates Loveland, wins first state title since 1984: by psaundersdp copreps

“Put a ring on it,” the homemade signs read.

Saturday marked Broomfield’s first state football title since 1984 when it captured the Class 3A crown. Saturday’s win also wiped away the sting of a 34-3 loss to Pine Creek in the 2019 championship game when the current Broomfield seniors were baby-faced freshmen. But in the end, the Eagles, led by Wisconsin-bound senior quarterback Cole LaCrue, had too much talent.

On the game’s first play from scrimmage, junior Brent Harris fumbled the ball and Loveland’s Hudson Voggesser recovered at the Broomfield 35. But the Eagles answered with two big defensive plays. Senior Garrett Keeler made a great open-field tackle on Trey Olsen for a 15-yard loss. Then sophomore cornerback Mikhail Brenner picked off Garrett Harstad’s pass and returned it to the Broomfield 47.On the Eagles’ second play from scrimmage, LaCrue’s shovel pass to Harris went for 37 yards.

Loveland picked off LaCrue twice and beat him up a bit, too. By the end of the game, LeCrue was hobbling on a right ankle that has bothered him much of the season.
