Heavier precipitation, colder temperature and higher wind speeds this week in Austin are probably keys to the difference in the city 75 miles northeast of San Antonio., the municipally-owned electric utility that serves about 500,000 customers, said Wednesday that ice accumulation was causing power lines to fall, not problems with the power supply.

In San Antonio, as many as 41,000 CPS Energy customers — about 4.5 percent of the utility’s total — were without power early Wednesday, with outages also caused largely by downed trees and power lines. By late Thursday morning, CPS said the number of outages was down to less than 3,600.
