but that plan was dumped in 2021 by then-prime minister Scott Morrison in favour of the AUKUS deal that strengthens strategic defence ties with Washington and London.The federal government has earmarked $2 billion in spending for a first stage of readying the Osborne site so that it is capable of building nuclear-powered submarines.
He said 4000 workers would be needed for the initial works at the Osborne shipyard, and any fears about a “Valley of Death” where large chunks of a specialty workforce would be idle as other defence contracts came to an end, did not apply this time. “We’ve got more work than we know what to do with”.
