If you’re looking for a weekend getaway not too far from home and you’re fond of a refreshing, salty sea breeze, aSimon’s Town is a small seaside village on the southern tip of the Cape Peninsula. It is significant to South African history because it is the site of one of the country’s oldest operational naval stations.Named after Governor Simon van der Stel, Simon’s Town was a Dutch naval anchorage beginning in 1741, and its harbour served as a refuge for merchant ships and whalers.
Expect to see many monuments, memorials and statues dedicated to past seafarers and pioneers when visiting Simon’s Town. A statue dedicated to Just Nuisance, the only dog ever officially enlisted in the South African Navy, stands just outside the Quayside Hotel.Able Seaman Just Nuisance served between 1939 and 1944 in Simon’s Town. The beloved Great Dane died in 1944 and was buried with full military honours, a Royal Marine firing party and a lone bugler.
Guests staying in a sea-facing room have access to French doors that open to reveal charming views of the False Bay yacht basin. Each room has twin, king, or queen-size beds as well as an en-suite bathroom.
