MOBILE, Ala. —The plan calls for an approximately 162-foot platform which, according to the plans, would accommodate three coach cars. The train would have a locomotive at each end.In late February, the Federal Railroad Administration determined that the project would have no negative impacts on the use “of coastal resources”, giving the project a green light from the environmental standpoint.
The station would be constructed along the western side of the existing tracks just south of the Convention Center, taking up some of the existing parking lot. The project would require approximately 3,000 feet of layover track to be installed, ending with a bumper block just past the platform. Construction of the platform and redesigning the parking lot would result in an additional 16 parking spaces, going from 97 spaces to 113.
The Mobile City Council approved $3.0 million over three years to fund the operation in 2020. In previous filings before the Surface Transportation Board, Amtrak was hopeful that a land use agreement with the City of Mobile could be reached by April or May.
