TAIPEI, July 7 — Taiwan’s President Tsai Ing-wen today warned of “counter measures” should a sweeping security law China imposed on Hong Kong “damage” the island. Beijing has taken an especially hardline towards Taiwan ever since the 2016 election of Tsai because she regards the island as a de facto sovereign nation and not part of “one China.”
“If the implementation of the national security law for Hong Kong were to cause any damage to our country or cause any irrational situation, we would consider counter measures,” Tsai told reporters without elaborating.Since 2016 Beijing has ramped up military, diplomatic and economic pressure on the island.
