Speaking in an interview at the Twin Oaks Estate in Washington on June 17, 2026, Yui underscored the island's commitment to increasing its defense capabilities and spending, but noted that purchasing U.S. arms remains essential to survive a potential crisis.
He stated that Taiwan will not rely solely on U.S. intervention, clarifying, "That's why we're willing to acquire, to buy U.S. equipment and arms to make ourselves stronger.
" Yui described the threat level from China as "actually pretty high," citing daily incursions by Chinese warships and military aircraft and larger-scale exercises in recent years. He framed Taiwan as a peaceful democracy facing aggression from the People's Republic of China, which seeks to "annihil our freedom and democracy.
" The $14 billion arms sale proposal, approved by senior U.S. lawmakers earlier in the year, remains pending under the Trump administration. While U.S. law obligates Washington to provide Taiwan with sufficient defensive hardware to deter Chinese aggression, the sale has not yet moved forward. Senator Marco Rubio, involved in the review process, explained that the administration is weighing factors including the availability of U.S. weapons stockpiles, which have been strained by other global commitments.
He affirmed that U.S. policy on Taiwan has not changed and that arms deals are not negotiated or consulted with Beijing, though the administration is aware of China's consistent objections. Yui noted that Taiwan respects the administration's "tempo" in making announcements and observed that President Trump's approach to Beijing has become more conciliatory following the previous trade war, creating an impression of mixed messages.
However, Yui expressed confidence in the overall Taiwan-U.S. relationship. Yui also addressed the broader strategic context, referencing the Pentagon's 2026 defense strategy that aims to deter China through strength by building a "denial defense" along a line of islands including Taiwan. This aligns with Taiwan's own efforts to ensure its security.
Meanwhile, Beijing has not commented on Yui's statements but consistently opposes any U.S. arms sales to Taiwan and views the island as a core interest, vowing eventual unification by force if necessary. The situation remains tense as China's military pressure continues and Taiwan seeks to balance self-reliance with U.S. support.
