After several major Star Wars movie announcements, Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy provides an update on Taika Waititi’s franchise endeavor.

Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy provides an update on Taika Waititi's Star Wars movie, which was first announced in 2020. Waititi is best known for his work in the MCU, directing Thor: Ragnarok and Thor: Love and Thunder. Waititi would later join the Star Wars universe with The Mandalorian, voicing droid IG-11 and directing the season 1 finale.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT After Lucasfilm announced several new Star Wars movies at Star Wars Celebration 2023, it became increasingly unclear what the status of Waititi's project is. Now, in a recent interview with Variety, Kennedy confirms that Waititi is still working on the script for his project. Check out Kennedy's full comment below:

“Taika is still working away. He’s writing the script himself. He doesn’t really want to bring others into that process and I don’t blame him. He has a very, very unique voice. So we want to protect that and that’s what he’s doing. But we’re going to make that one day.

It was announced at Star Wars Celebration 2023 that three new movies are in active development, including a Dave Filoni-directed Mandalorian universe movie and Star Wars: New Jedi Order, which will see the return of Daisy Ridley's Rey. Waititi's movie, however, should take after James Mangold's Star Wars: Dawn of the Jedi, which chronicles the origin of the Jedi and their relationship to The Force tens of thousands of years before the existing films in the franchise.

Due to his idiosyncratic filmmaking sensibilities, Waititi is probably best suited to exploring an as-yet unexplored part of the Star Wars universe. Instead of dealing with elements of the franchise that audiences are already very familiar with, Waititi's Star Wars movie would perhaps do well to introduce a totally new cast of characters in a story that takes place in a totally new era.
