Tacos are never far from reach in Texas, and they’ll be more than plentiful this weekend when the annual Tacos Over Texas competition and festival returns to Houston on Sunday, May 7.

Area restaurants and food trucks will compete in the annual Tacos Over Texas taco celebration on May 7, an event supporting The Ninfa Laurenzo Scholarship Fund. This year’s Tacos Over Texas will be a bit different, said organizer Phyllis Laurenzo Mandola, Mama Ninfa’s daughter. Instead of charging an admission that includes taco samples, admission will be free; individual vendors will sell tacos at their own pricing.

“Because the industry has struggled, we’re allowing them to charge,” Mandola said of the Tacos Over Texas participants. The full list of participating vendors is still being assembled and will be announced before the event. But Tacos Over Texas remains a competition for creative and traditional tacos that will be judged by a panel that will include celebrity chefs and food media writers. The event also will include beverages for purchase and entertainment .

Proceeds will provide scholarship funding for students to attend a Catholic high school or Texas college. To date, the scholarship fund has provided more than 60 students with financial assistance.Greg Morago was a features editor and reporter for The Hartford Courant for 25 years before joining the Houston Chronicle as food editor in 2009. He writes about food, restaurants, spirits, travel, fashion and beauty.
