Tacoma city leaders are warning of the potential closure of over 300 homeless shelter beds in 2025 due to budgetary constraints. Unless additional funding is secured from the Washington State Legislature, a third of Tacoma's homeless shelter beds are at risk of being defunded.
Tacoma city leaders said ongoing budgetary problems could lead to the closure of more than 300 homeless shelter beds in 2025. According to a Dec. 10 city council meeting, a total of 307 beds in five different locations are at risk of going away if proper funding isn't secured. Additionally, two other locations are already slated to be closed in the spring, meaning a third of all the homeless shelter beds in Tacoma are in jeopardy of being defunded.
As a result of the looming bed shortages, city leaders said their only hope of keeping those beds open is to receive financial help from the Washington State Legislature. City leaders said the places most impacted would be the Forging Path Community, where 135 beds are set to be lost in June 2025, as well as the Tacoma Emergency Micro-Shelter Site No. 3, where 60 beds are slated to be lost in June 2025. At the Dec. 10 meeting, Caleb Carbone of Tacoma’s Neighborhood and Community Services Department noted that the city has $3 million to operate most of Tacoma's homeless shelters through the middle of 2025.In the months before money runs out, he said he planned to request additional funding from state lawmakers. According to Carbone, an additional $6 million would be needed to maintain all the homeless sites that are currently in operation
