Last weekend, a group of 6 entrepreneurs, researchers and designers from the ForbesUnder30 list devised a new solution for improving digital literacy in Detroit: Under30Summit

Detroit is tackling a tough technology problem. Thirty percent of its households lack Internet access, and the spread of the coronavirus has only increased the importance of digital skills. Public and private organizations are jumping in to help with initiatives likeBut once they gain online access, how can they make the most of it?

The team’s idea was “Master After Class,” a digital platform where Detroit teenagers can discover their passions, master new skills and share their credentials with employers. Today’s online education platforms “lack a clear curriculum that is focused, curated and engaging,” said ecommerce entrepreneur Derek Khanna during the group’s Zoom presentation on Sunday night.

Tinder cofounder Sean Rad mentored the group, first discussing the challenges of education technology. “The careful nuance with any tech platform in education is, How do you address the concerns of traditional educators while amplifying the current system, instead of replacing it with something that’s a little less human?”
