I know a lot say nothing will ever top the first game, but my hot take is that this one got eerily close to surpassing the original. Such a good story and amazing characters.
First off, let’s get this out of the way; this game is just gorgeous. Decked out in colourful flowers and situated beside a gently flowing river with a natural waterfall that empties into a mountain lake, Haven Springs is the textbook definition of the word “idyllic.” The game absolutely revels in the natural beauty of the Colorado wilderness, and the quaint shops along the village’s main street add their own unique touches of rustic charm to the scene.
So far, all of the commenters who’ve played the game have been pretty much in agreement… the graphics, the audio, and theof the game were on point and fit nicely within the Life is Strange universe. But the strength of the franchise has always been in the stories these games tell and the characters that populate the world.
Which, of course, is what makes the end of the first chapter so impactful. Alex must venture up into the mountains with Gabe and Ryan to rescue Ethan, Gabe’s girlfriend’s son, who went off to explore the old mines in the area, even though the mining company has scheduled an explosion to go off in the area that evening. When they find Ethan trapped on a ledge, Alex is able to use her ability to understand why Ethan is afraid and help him calm down enough to get back to safety.
The first chapter sets up a compelling story, but several people argued that the main plot sort of stalls out after that. The Typhon mining company is so obviously bad that it’s no surprise to learn they’re behind it all, and even the big “twist” at the end was somewhat predictable given the series’ history of taking the most likeable NPCs and dramatically revealing that they were the bad guy all along.
