T-Mobile customers can now register to test its upcoming Starlink satellite direct-cell service, which promises to bridge 500,000 square miles of cellular dead zones across the US.
T-Mobile is allowing customers to sign up for a beta test of its upcoming Starlink satellite direct-cell service. This service aims to cover 500,000 square miles of dead zones in the US where terrestrial cell towers are absent. Customers can register for free on a dedicated page, and testing is scheduled to begin early next year. The beta program is open to all post-paid customers with compatible satellite phones, although a complete list of compatible devices has not been released.
Initially, beta testers will only have access to satellite texting, with voice calls and data to be added later. The FCC granted approval last month for T-Mobile and SpaceX to offer satellite-to-service to customers, although not with the higher radio emission power required for real-time voice and video calls. In August, Verizon and AT&T expressed concerns that a fully operational T-Mobile service could interfere with their satellite services. T-Mobile tested direct-to-cell emergency alerts in September, and SpaceX activated satellite text messaging for T-Mobile customers in hurricane-affected areas in October
