T-Mobile is launching a beta version of its satellite-to-cell service powered by Starlink, enabling coverage in areas without traditional cellular infrastructure.
T-Mobile is making a significant move to eliminate cellular ' dead zones ' by partnering with Starlink , Elon Musk 's satellite internet provider, to offer satellite connectivity for both iPhone and Android users. The company announced the beta version of its satellite-to-cell service during the Super Bowl on Sunday night, emphasizing its availability to customers of all major carriers, including Verizon and AT&T.
CEO Mike Sievert, in a statement, highlighted the groundbreaking nature of this service, stating that T-Mobile Starlink will seamlessly connect compatible devices in areas lacking cellular coverage. 'It's a massive technical achievement and an absolute game changer for all wireless users ... we're officially putting 'no bars' on notice,' he said. Starlink's satellite network will enable users to send and receive text messages even in remote locations devoid of traditional mobile tower infrastructure. Approximately half a million square miles of the United States currently lack cell coverage, a vast expanse equivalent to two states the size of Texas.T-Mobile plans to roll out data and voice call coverage through Starlink in the future. Initially, a limited number of testers will have access to the service for free until July. After that, customers on T-Mobile's Go5G Next plan will continue to enjoy free Starlink, while users on other plans will be charged $15 per month, with a discounted rate of $10 for sign-ups completed before February's end. Customers on competing networks will face a monthly charge of $20. Potential users can register for the service through a dedicated website.
