A shooting and vehicle-ramming attack at a Detroit-area synagogue resulted in the death of the suspect, identified as Ayman Mohamad Ghazali. Michigan officials condemned the attack, and the community expressed shock and concern. The incident, which occurred at Temple Israel Synagogue in West Bloomfield, Michigan, prompted a strong response from law enforcement and community leaders. The suspect, who died at the scene, had recently lost family members in an Israeli attack in Lebanon. No one inside the synagogue was injured, but one security guard was hurt. The incident comes amid rising tensions and concerns about hate crimes.

Michigan Senator Elissa Slotkin strongly condemned the attack. Dearborn Heights Mayor Mo Baydoun stated that Ayman Mohamad Ghazali, a 41-year-old individual involved in the shooting and vehicle-ramming attack at a Detroit-area synagogue on Thursday, had lost several family members in an Israeli attack on their home in Lebanon.

Baydoun vehemently condemned the attack, emphasizing that everyone deserves to worship in peace and any attack on a house of worship or its occupants must be unequivocally condemned. He added that Ghazali, the suspect, was a resident of Dearborn Heights and had died at the scene of the incident at Temple Israel Synagogue in West Bloomfield. Earlier in the month, Ghazali had suffered the loss of several family members, including his niece and nephew, in an Israeli attack on their home in Lebanon. Law enforcement personnel were called to the scene at Temple Israel following reports of an active shooter on March 12, 2026, in West Bloomfield, Michigan.\Michigan Senator Elissa Slotkin also expressed her strong condemnation of the attack, stating her deep frustration with the recurring nature of such incidents in her community and across the country. She asserted that everyone has the right to worship in peace, and any act of antisemitism, violence, or hate should be met with the full force of the law. Slotkin told ABC News on Thursday that she was tired of these incidents occurring within her community and throughout the nation, emphasizing the need to acknowledge the presence of a problem and her distress regarding it. Ghazali, who was armed with a rifle, died after a shootout with security personnel at Temple Israel Synagogue in West Bloomfield, Michigan, as confirmed by a senior federal law enforcement official briefed on the investigation. Thankfully, no one inside the synagogue was injured. The synagogue reported that all 140 students, staff, teachers, and security personnel were accounted for, according to Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard. The incident occurred during a period of heightened sensitivity and tension due to the rising instances of hate and senseless violence being witnessed across the globe. Baydoun commented on the interconnectedness of our shared safety, observing how global tensions frequently manifest within local neighborhoods, and also stated that harm inflicted on innocent people anywhere in the world should be universally condemned.\The Sheriff's office revealed that one synagogue security guard was struck by the suspect's truck in the attack, resulting in unconsciousness, though the guard was expected to recover. There were no other injuries reported. However, 30 law enforcement officers were transported to the hospital for treatment of smoke inhalation, according to Sheriff Bouchard. Baydoun assured the community that the city was working closely with its police department and regional partners to ensure the safety of every house of worship. He urged residents to remain aware and vigilant, especially during the sacred final days of Ramadan, encouraging them to care for one another and report anything suspicious. He expressed his heartfelt sympathy for all those affected by this deeply painful event. The attack underscores the importance of community vigilance, interfaith cooperation, and unwavering support for those affected by acts of violence and hate. The need to address the root causes of such violence and to promote understanding and empathy within and between communities remains paramount
