LA County wants to dig up and haul away decades of built up sediment, but community fears noise, pollution and more.
Sylmar residents Joe Greblo, Ann Job and John Partovi at the Sylmar Flight Park landing zone in Sylmar with the San Gabriel Mountains and Pacoima Reservoir behind them Friday, October 13, 2023. Some residents are concerned about the moving 5.5-million-plus tons of sediment from the Pacoima Reservoir into the area. The Los Angeles County Flood Control District, as lead agency under the California Environmental Quality Act commonly known as CEQA, conducted a scoping meeting Thursday, Oct.
“We oppose an option being considered to create sediment placement sites in our canyons south of the Pacoima Dam,” said Ann Job, a community activist and a former president of the Sylmar Neighborhood Council.Residents’ concerns centered on truck traffic, noise, stirring up pollutants in the sediments and the safety of wildlife. Many residents claimed they were not notified about the meetings that led to producing the environmental impact reports. The Pacoima Reservoir Friday, October 13, 2023.
Klippel said dams throughout the county provide millions of people with water. “Without flood protection and capture, water ends up in the ocean,” he said. Construction is expected to begin in late 2025 with 1.5 million cubic yards of sediment removed over a five-year period, according to county officials.
Many of the larger areas within the watershed have been burned multiple times with approximately 96 percent of the tributary watershed burned by least once and sometimes more, causing an above average buildup of sediment. The storm events following these fires, have considerably increased sediment deposition into the reservoir.
