Public transport commuters in Sydney have been told to brace for major interruptions to train services every weekend for the next year as the state government begins the biggest rail maintenance program in the city's history.
The New South Wales Labor government announced on Sunday that Sydney’s rail network would be undergoing the most extensive program of rail maintenance in its history under the Sydney Rail Repair Plan, on account of long banked-up servicing demands of more than six years.

The plan comes in response to an independent review of Sydney Trains’ Rail Infrastructure and Systems by the National Transport Commission that found a massive maintenance backlog was having an appalling impact on everyday train operations.
