With Sydney Uni deriving about half its revenue from foreign students, incoming chancellor David Thodey welcomes “a conversation” about effect on the broader community.
Already a subscriber?Sydney University will continue to “embrace” international students and the significant revenue they bring, but their effect onMr Thodey, the former Telstra chief executive who chairs private hospital operator Ramsay Health Care and accounting software provider Xero, will replace Belinda Hutchinson as chancellor when her 12-year stint – the maximum allowable – comes to an end in July.
Domestic student enrolments are expected to double to 1.8 million by 2050, which will have far-reaching consequences for who universities teach, and how they teach them.At the same time, reforms to migration settings since Home Affairs Minister Clare O’Neil released a major report in December are playing havoc with enrolments. Added scrutiny of potential students has led to historically high rates of rejection of visa applications.
. While Mr Thodey said those students were integral to the university, “it should not be at the expense of domestic students because we are quintessentially Australian”.Ms Hutchinson, a former chairman of insurance giant QBE, said Sydney University was vastly different to when she was appointed chancellor in 2013, and was unrecognisable compared to when she studied economics there 50 years ago.
