University of Sydney Vice-Chancellor Mark Scott has defended the right of pro-Palestinian protesters to use the antisemitic phrase “from the river to the sea” while the University of Melbourne boss takes a tougher stance and threatens activists on his campus with expulsion.
The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Sydney has recognised the phrase"from the river to the sea" is"difficult" but has refused to clear pro-Palestinian encampments from campus grounds.
University of Sydney Vice-Chancellor Mark Scott has defended the right of pro-Palestinian protesters to use the antisemitic phrase “from the river to the sea” at rallies across his prestigious campus. Picture: Richard Dobson Professor Scott wrote that the university would act where free speech crosses the line to “hate speech”, but claimed the phrase “from the river to the sea” did not meet that threshold.
His decision not to remove protesters from his campus is also at odds with the University of Melbourne which today issued a stern warning to students who refuse to leave that they could face expulsion.
