Sydney Sweeney with a concerned expression in The Housemaid
The Housemaid dominated the box office during its theatrical run and grossed over $397 million at the box office, making it the best-performing movie for director Paul Feig and its star Sweeney. The movie was adapted from Freida McFadden's best-selling novel series, and Lionsgate identified and optioned the trilogy, as well as a fourth short story to be adapted.
Lionsgate has announced that the highly anticipated sequel, The Housemaid's Secret, will be officially released in theaters on December 17, 2027. The news comes after Kirsten Dunst was announced to be joining the cast, as well as Sweeney, Michele Morrone, and potentially Amanda Seyfried, who would be returning to reprise their roles. In The Housemaid’s Secret, Millie returns, taking a job keeping house for a woman she’s never allowed to see—only to discover the truth behind the locked door that threatens to expose secrets far darker than her own. The Housemaid's Secret follows Millie working for a new family named the Garricks, who are just as wealthy and just as secretive. Millie suspects the wife, Wendy , is being abused by her husband, Douglas, and hatches yet another devious plan. Screenwriter Rebecca Sonnenshine , who adapted the first book, will also return to write. Carly Elter, who oversaw the first movie for Hidden Pictures, is returning as executive producer. Alex Young of Hidden Pictures will also executive produce. Fifty-Fifty’s Kaylee McGregor will co-produce. The release date for The Housemaid's sequel comes after the highly successful strategy from the first movie, which opened on the same weekend. The film initially opened to $19 million and continued strongly to ultimately amass $125 million at the domestic box office and nearly $400 million worldwide. Sweeney's other successful movie, Anyone But You, also had similar success opening around the same time. Feig revealed that production for the film will begin later this year, and producer Todd Lieberman revealed that they"started writing the sequel before the first one even came out. I can't really talk about where we are now, but I will say this: the script is excellent, and there's a lot of excitement around it." The Housemaid is available to stream on Starz from April 1, and The Housemaid's Secret will arrive in theaters on December 17, 2027.
