Sydney Sweeney's meteoric rise in Hollywood continues with her nomination for Best Supporting Actress at the Oscars for her captivating portrayal of Joan Baez in 'A Complete Unknown'. Learn about her journey from her early days to this career-defining moment.

Just two years after her surprise appearance at the Oscars , Sydney Sweeney is back, this time as a nominee for Best Supporting Actress . Her captivating performance as iconic folk musician Joan Baez in the film ' A Complete Unknown ', alongside Timothée Chalamet as Bob Dylan, has garnered her critical acclaim and a coveted nomination. Sweeney admits that the reality of the nomination still hasn't sunk in, let alone what she'll wear or who she'll bring to the ceremony on March 2nd.

Used to navigating industry events solo, she's now thrilled at the prospect of sharing this momentous occasion with someone special. During a Zoom call from London, where she's currently filming a crime drama directed by Bart Layton, Sweeney also revealed that she's on the cusp of another significant milestone - meeting Baez in person. She plans to fly to San Francisco, where Baez will be honored on February 8th, and despite having communicated with the legendary folk star, she confesses to feeling nervous. 'I feel nerves when I see her name light up on my phone,' Sweeney admits. 'I hope I don't just start crying or something. I'll try to keep my cool.' But at least she doesn't have to worry about Baez's opinion of her portrayal. Baez herself has praised Sweeney's performance, stating that she loved what she did in the film. 'If I didn't think she was good at it, I probably wouldn't have enjoyed it in general,' Baez told the Marin Independent Journal. 'But she looked enough like me and she had my gestures down. You could tell who it was. She worked so hard. Kudos to her for taking the role on.' Sweeney's portrayal captures not only Baez's distinctive voice, musical style, and stage presence but also her self-assuredness. To prepare for the role, she immersed herself in Baez's music and life, learning to play guitar and sing, even wearing fake teeth during filming. She credits Baez's direct insights as invaluable to her performance. 'I cried a lot when we got off the phone the first time, because just hearing her voice, there was an intimacy to it for me that was just crazy,' Sweeney shares. 'When you obsess over someone, when you study someone so intensely, it becomes a part of you in a way.' Sweeney's journey to this point has been marked by steady growth and recognition. After honing her skills in small commercials and TV shows, she landed her first major role in the second season of Lifetime's 'Unreal'. She later joined the NBC legal drama 'Chicago Justice' and appeared in Netflix's 'The Good Cop'. Her breakthrough came with 'Top Gun: Maverick', where she portrayed naval aviator Lieutenant Natasha 'Phoenix' Trace, earning industry attention and boosting her confidence. Shortly after, she was offered the co-lead role in the Netflix series 'FUBAR' alongside Arnold Schwarzenegger, without even needing an audition. 'I was able to show up with a different sense of self and certain self-certainty on that,' she reflects. Balancing her roles in 'A Complete Unknown' and 'FUBAR' simultaneously, which involved a shift from a period folk drama to an action spy comedy, proved to be a unique experience. Interestingly, she believes that stepping in and out of Joan's character actually enriched her performance in 'A Complete Unknown'. 'I do think the scenes that I filmed toward the end of the process, whether that was just more time spent as her or whether it was like the fluctuations and letting it go and then coming back to it, those I think were the better scenes of my work in the movie,' she explains. The final scene she filmed involved Baez and Dylan in Dylan's apartment, where he plays 'Blowin' in the Wind' for her. This intimate moment showcases the musical and personal connection between the two artists. 'There was just a comfort level there,' Sweeney says. 'Even though you're playing two people who don't know each other, as actors, you need that comfortability.' After wrapping filming, Sweeney had just two hours to pack and catch her flight to continue working on 'FUBAR'. She describes the emotional experience of letting go of such a transformative filming experience. Despite this, she hasn't completely abandoned Joan. She continues to play guitar and has even started writing songs. 'When I play it, I feel like I get to go back into a creative space that I really fell in love with working on this film,' she shares. 'It feels like a sanctuary with the instrument and almost spiritual.' For now, her songs remain personal, though she acknowledges the possibility of exploring them further in the future. 'Who knows what I do with it?' she muses. 'It feels very, at times, therapeutic.
