Sydney Sweeney in The Housemaid
In just a week of release at the domestic box office, The Housemaid has overtaken a host of past erotic thrillers, including the classic Body Heat, the infamous Original Sin, and even the forgotten Chloe.
The movie stars Sydney Sweeney and Amanda Seyfried, and is directed by Paul Feig and based on a 2022 bestseller by Freida McFadden. It was always expected to do well, but considering Sweeney's poor streak over the last year, anything was possible. The young star had delivered five flops in a row, four of which The Housemaid passed in its opening weekend alone. It's now on the verge of hitting the $30 million mark at the domestic box office; by Sunday, the movie is projected to pass the $40 million milestone, after which it'll make a beeline for the coveted $100 million mark powered by positive audience response. Most recently, The Housemaid overtook the $28 million lifetime haul of last year's erotic thriller Babygirl, starring Nicole Kidman as a powerful CEO who begins a romantic relationship with an intern, played by Harris Dickinson. Directed by Halina Reijn, Babygirl grossed more than $60 million at the worldwide box office, and earned mostly positive reviews. It's now sitting at a"certified fresh" 76% score on the aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, where the critics' consensus reads,"Nicole Kidman and Harris Dickinson memorably smolder together in Babygirl, with writer-director Halina Reijn's clinical gaze keeping this sexually frank thriller more provocative than prurient." The Housemaid cost $10 million more to produce than Babygirl, whose reported budget stands at $25 million. 'The Housemaid' Is in for a Tough Battle at the Box Office this Weekend Incidentally, The Housemaid holds the exact same critics' score on RT, with a consensus that reads,"A sly throwback to the lurid thrillers that used to dominate multiplexes, The Housemaid cleans up nicely thanks to its wicked sense of fun and a delightfully unnerving performance from Amanda Seyfried." However, unlike Babygirl, which is currently sitting at a poor 48% audience score on the aggregator, The Housemaid can count on its"verified hot" 92% score to tackle competition over the holidays. This weekend, the movie is expected to generate more than $12 million, as it battles the animated hit David, as well as the wide expansion of Marty Supreme and the musical drama Song Sung Blue for the third spot on the weekend charts. James Cameron's Avatar: Fire and Ash is expected to hold on to the number one spot, with the meta-comedy Anaconda sliding up the rankings and claiming the number two spot for itself.
