AFL annual general meetings, where club presidents meet with the AFL before the season launch, are often brief. 7AFL 7NEWS

Technically, they don’t have to be.

But that proposal had concerned some clubs, and may prompt them to ask for the right to approve any new candidates. It’s technical, but traditionally the AFL has named new commissioners after the AGM, and then they are ratified and approved at the next AGM. But the current nominations committee hasn’t made any recommendations, hasn’t formally met in over a year, and is understood to have only met once in the past two years. There is some concern that hasn’t happened - even informally.

Dillon was in meetings Monday with McLachlan in Sydney, where both had dinner with GWS. You wouldn’t call it an intervention but, concerned over crowds and a lack of penetration into Western Sydney, AFL executives including commercial boss Kylie Rogers are heavily involved in GWS. There is also some club concern the AFL has now committed $21m fixed and variable funding for 10 years to Tasmania. Clubs were told it would be $17 million in projections delivered as recently as September.

It’s also easy to understand why the process has been slow; the new CEO should choose the AFL football boss, and the structure of the football department. For example, if Goyder put Brendon Gale or Tom Harley under Dillon, that person could run football.via Getty Images
