An Australian father has been reunited with his family after spending four years behind bars in Vietnam over his pro-democracy activism.
The father and retired baker was arrested in January 2019 and sentenced to 12 years over his membership with pro-democracy group Viet Tan – which the Vietnamese government considers a “terrorist group”.His wife Quynh Trang Truong thanked the Australian government for their support to ensure Mr Chau's release.
“We wish to thank the Australian government for their care and support whilst in custody; especially the tremendous efforts by various Departments in securing his return to Australia and to his family today,” she said. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, speaking from Berlin, said Mr Chau's release was “an example of how engagement in a constructive way achieves results in Australia’s national interest”.
