Southwest Research Institute receives $26 million contract from NASA to build magnetometers for upcoming space weather missions.
Southwest Research Institute (SwRI) has been awarded a $26 million contract by NASA to develop sensitive magnetometers for two upcoming space weather missions. These instruments, named SW-MAG, will be deployed on satellites orbiting the Sun, providing scientists with continuous observations of the interplanetary magnetic field carried by the solar wind.
The data collected will be crucial for NOAA's Space Weather Prediction Center, which issues forecasts, warnings, and alerts to mitigate the impacts of space weather on Earth's technology. Space weather refers to the variable conditions on the Sun and in space that can disrupt satellite communications, navigation systems, and power grids. SwRI will collaborate with the University of New Hampshire (UNH) to develop, calibrate, and evaluate the magnetometers. NASA and NOAA will oversee the development, launch, and testing of the satellites, providing necessary funding and launch services
