SwRI astrophysicist Amir Caspi is leading NASA and National Science Foundation missions to study the rare phenomenon.

A Southwest Research Institute scientist is preparing to chase the April 8 total solar eclipse from the ground and the sky with help from two NASA jets and hundreds of volunteers across the country. Amir Caspi, an astrophysicist at SwRI’s office in Boulder, Colo., is leading two projects that will look at the sun’s corona, solar winds and wavelengths of sunlight normally veiled by the sun’s brightness.

Magic islands’ on Saturn’s moon baffled scientists for years. The mystery may finally be solved. “Eclipses in principle are a transformative experience, but we’re also hoping that by being able to engage with the eclipse in this new way, doing professional-level science and learning about the sun, it’s not just a cosmic phenomenon now. It’s also what they’re learning about how the sun works and how stars work and how the moon orbits the Earth,” Caspi said.
