CLEVELAND, Ohio — The National Weather Service is warning people in several counties against swimming in Lake Erie today because of strong rip currents.
The high risk of rip currents is expected through this afternoon in Cuyahoga, Lake, Lorain and Erie counties, according to the Weather Service. The currents are strong enough to carry swimmers away from the shore and out into the lake. Winds will be strong on the lake today, between 15 and 20 knots, with waves at 3 to 5 feet, before subsiding to 2 to 4 feet. Waves occasionally could reach 6 feet, according to the Weather Service.will not offer ideal conditions for swimming. Although it’s expected to be sunny, temperatures will stay in the low 70s. The water temperature off Cleveland is only 50 degrees, according to NWS.
