For the past few months Finn, aged 7, has shown a special interest in one very unique type of food.

A proud mom has opened up about the way her autistic son has struck up a unique bond with his nanny. Jacqui Wilson from Dungannon, County Tyrone in Northern Ireland, posted a clip to her TikTok @jacquiwilson94 showing the sight she’s greeted with every time she comes to collect her son Finn, 7, from his childminder.

Finn is nonverbal and autistic. He may not be able to communicate in the same way as other children his age, but lately Finn has made one thing abundantly clear to his friends and family: he loves Jell-O, or jelly as it’s more commonly referred to in his homeland. “He has loved it for a few months now,” Wilson told Newsweek. “It’s sensory for him and he loves the colour red in everything.” The benefits of sensory play are well documented. In 2017, a study published in the journal the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences highlighted how exposure to sensory-rich environments was a positive influence on cognitive development, regardless of neurotype. Sensory play facilitates learning in a unique way. Finn’s interest is a prime example of that. “He’s very sensory with jelly,” Wilson said. “ It can be carried about, touched, sniffed, and played with in his hands.” Wilson is happy to indulge Finn’s interest in Jell-O, as is his nanny, who he sees twice a week. “His nanny makes him pots of it and nobody else is allowed to touch them,” Wilson said. “He carries them everywhere with him and every time he visits his nanny she has it made for him and he goes to the fridge and lifts out all the pots at once as soon as he goes in the door.” Wilson said Finn’s nanny is only too happy to go above and beyond for her “special boy” and told her how he often likes to “sit on her sofa with the pot of jelly and watch the phone with the red reflection on top of it.” “She makes it for him and it sets in the fridge overnight for him,” Wilson said. “She gets up at 7 a.m. to have it ready to set before he comes over.” Jacqui Wilson’s son Finn loves jelly. For her troubles, Finn’s nanny gets “the biggest hug and kiss from him” in return. Wilson, for her part, gets something else when she comes to pick him up at the end of the day: pots and pots of Jell-O. That’s what’s captured in the video Wilson posted to TikTok: Finn leaving his childminder’s home carrying various pots of Jell-O. “I want people to see what life is like for a child with high support needs,” Wilson said. “It’s the little things that bring them the most joy.” It’s certainly found an audience with the 33-second clip racking up over 320,000 views already. “Nanny got the memo,” one user wrote, with another branding her “the best nanny.” Wilson set up her TikTok channel to highlight what life is like for Finn and his family and the special moments along the way. “Finn needs help in every aspect of his life so seeing him being independent is amazing for us,” she said. “My son might not reach the typical milestones that most children have reached at 12 months old but he can carry four pots of jelly and a phone and won’t drop a thing.”
