Swedish prosecutors have launched a preliminary investigation into suspected aggravated sabotage after an undersea fiber optic cable connecting Latvia and the Swedish island of Gotland was damaged. The investigation involves multiple authorities, including the National Police Operations Department, the Coast Guard, and the Armed Forces. The Swedish Coast Guard has detained a Maltese-flagged vessel, the Vezhen, suspected of being involved in the damage.

Swedish authorities have launched a preliminary investigation into suspected sabotage after an underwater fiber optic cable connecting Latvia and the Swedish island of Gotland was damaged. The Swedish Coast Guard confirmed that they were on site near a Maltese-flagged vessel identified as the Vezhen, which was anchored near the port of Karlskrona. Prosecutors have ordered the detention of the vessel.

The incident comes as tensions in the Baltic Sea escalate, with concerns of Russian sabotage and espionage growing. According to data from Vesselfinder, the vessel departed from the Russian port of Ust-Luga several days earlier and was navigating between Gotland and Latvia at the time the damage was suspected. Latvia's state-run radio and TV center (LVRTC) reported disruptions in data transmission on the cable running from Ventspils to Gotland, concluding that there was a rupture. LVRTC stated that they were able to operate using other data transmission routes while working to repair the damaged cable. The Latvian Prime Minister, Evika Siliņa, announced that her government was collaborating with Swedish allies and NATO to investigate the incident, including patrolling the area and inspecting vessels that were present. Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson confirmed on social media that a cable belonging to a Latvian entity was believed to have been damaged and that he had been in close contact with Prime Minister Siliņa throughout the day. This latest incident follows a string of previous incidents involving ruptures of data cables in the Baltic Sea. Earlier this month, NATO launched a new mission called 'Baltic Sentry,' which includes frigates, maritime patrol aircraft, and naval drones to enhance surveillance and deterrence in the region. NATO emphasizes the mission's goal of protecting undersea cables and pipelines
