L3Harris' platforms can be recoverable, providing flexibility to develop and integrate different payloads.

A Melbourne-based defense giant has unveiled autonomous munitions that can help terrify the enemy on the battlefield. L3Harris’ newly launched effects munitions, Red Wolf and Green Wolf , are claimed to be cost-effective strike and accurate electronic warfare solutions.

These multi-role vehicles represent a significant leap forward in networked munitions capable of being deployed from air, ground, or maritime platforms to support joint all-domain operations. The launched vehicles are expected to meet the company’s ability to respond to the U.S. Department of Defense’s urgent need for advanced, capable, and affordable munitions it can employ across services and domains.Significant advantage in closing long-range kill chains“Our launched effects ‘wolf pack’ provides U.S. military branches – regardless of platform – with a significant advantage in closing long-range kill chains, defeating adversarial threats in challenging environments and protecting assets,” said Ed Zoiss, President, Space and Airborne Systems, L3Harris.“The Red Wolf and Green Wolf are lethal, modular, affordable and ready to hunt.”L3Harris designed, developed and built the vehicles over the past five years and completed more than 40 flights with them.Platforms can be recoverableThe platforms can be recoverable, providing flexibility to develop and integrate different payloads. The company will build dozens of systems as part of low-rate initial production by the end of 2025, supported by infrastructure expansions and automation enhancements, according to a press release.Reports revealed that together, Red Wolf and Green Wolf form a complete multi-domain toolkit that enables commanders to strike, jam, or surveil as operational needs evolve. Both vehicles feature advanced onboard softwareBoth vehicles feature advanced onboard software that supports autonomous coordination, swarming behaviors, dynamic re-targeting, and in-flight mission updates. They are built to be modular and scalable, making them adaptable to various tactical environments. Additionally, both platforms can be recovered and reused depending on mission profile and design configuration, offering significant cost and logistics advantages, according to Army Recognition.L3Harris’ pack of launched effects is comprised of multi-role vehicles that support special warfighter operations in highly contested areas and across multi-domain environments. Wolfs can fly significantly farther Reports also highlighted that Wolfs can fly at least 200nm – significantly farther than precision air-to-ground munitions currently carried on platforms like the AH-1Z. Sterling Jones, general manager of L3Harris’ Agile Development Group, also pointed out that the system is five to six times cheaper than what operational Naval Strike missiles today are being offered at.“The Red Wolf and the Green Wolf are right within that sweet spot for what the services are looking for,” said Jones.Other tests have included a high-altitude launch, igniting the Wolf’s subsonic jet engine at 40,000ft.While a single Red Wolf could be deployed like a cruise missile, Matthew Klunder, vice-president for US Navy and Marine Corps accounts at L3Harris, envisions swarms of the launched-effect vehicles. They could carry different payloads but operate together to perform complex group tasks, reported Flight Global.
