“Large quantities of imported coloured glass from drinking vessels were excavated on this site,” Muir-Watt told me. “Research matches the vessels to those in use around AD300, when Whithorn was possibly an early trade hub. Research tells us Whithorn was practising Christianity as early as AD450, 113 years earlier than when St Columba landed on Iona.”More recently, excavations have revealed the remnants of an Iron Age roundhouse dating even earlier, to around 430BC.
Whithorn sits in the Galloway and Southern Ayrshire Unesco Biosphere Reserve, a rural area that sprawls across 5,200 sq km. The reserve, which demonstrates the importance of landscapes and ecosystems, is one of 13 destinations on
